ADSL Helper is now Broadband Helper

Hello, and welcome to Broadband Helper!

That's right, ADSL Helper has now changed it's name to Broadband Helper. There are many reasons we have done this, some have been listed below:

Most people refer to their internet connection as a broadband connection instead of an ADSL connection, some people don't even know what ADSL is.

Broadband is easier to understand and while hopefully help us on search engine

We don't solely focus on ADSL, we have sections for Cable and Mobile Broadband.

The new URL for the website is www.broadbandhelper.co.uk, however if you have bookmarks and/or links for our old URL (www.adslhelper.co.uk), don't fret, as it will continue to work.

As the domain is new, there maybe a few hiccups around the site while the internet updates it's DNS records, this is normal behavior and affects most websites that make similar changes. However if issues do persist, please inform us via the Comments and Suggestions forum, thanks.

Thank you for your continued patience.

ADSL Helper is changing it's name!

We are very pleased to announce that ADSL Helper is changing it's name to Broadband Helper.

We are doing this for a number of reasons:

Most people refer to their internet connection as a broadband connection instead of an ADSL connection, some people don't even know what ADSL is.

Broadband is easier to understand and while hopefully help us on search engine

We don't solely focus on ADSL, we have sections for Cable and Mobile Broadband.

The change is expected to take place over the bank holiday (monday) and may mean the site may be inaccessible for a small period, however we aim for this to be very minimal.

The new URL for the website will be www.broadbandhelper.co.uk, however if you have bookmarks and/or links for our current URL (www.adslhelper.co.uk), don't fret, as they will continue to work after the change.

Once the change has been completed we will post an announcement stating so.

We thank you for your continued patience.

Broadband Problems

As some of you may know, i've been <del class='bbc'>bitching</del> moaning about my broadband a bit lately over in the O2 section, and I think it may soon all be solved.

I recently mentioned how my speed has dropped quite a bit over a period of several months, well apparently one of my friends who lives on the opposite side of the village has had the exact same problem, except hes got to the point where his internet resynchs numerous times a day.

After talking to him today it seems its down to a major problem on the cables between Helsby (where our exchange is) and Elton (where we live). The BT Openreach guy put my mate on 3 separate circuits, checked all the wiring around his house and at the exchange and couldn't find a problem.

A problem was eventually detected on the cables between the exchange and the green street cabs in the village, apparently water his got into the cables and started corroding at the copper, the good news meaning that BT are going to have to relay the cables.

Now along with this I heard some bad news, the Openreach guy mentioned to my mate that the exchange has recently been refit with all new equipment, however because it was done before the rollout of BT Infinity, it's not looking likely we'll be seeing it any time soon

On the plus side, may main I may see in increase in Internet Speeds and a decrease in line noise!!!

Baffled By Recent Events

Recently I've been wondering why the hell my speed has been radily decreasing. After looking at my line, I saw I was dropping sync..Kind of my fault killing the conneciton on usenet, but I didn't expect a sync rate of 2.8mb!

As you will see in the convo with ash, In the space of an hour, I've managed to get put onto Interleaving and have my Loop loss/Attenuation change like your banging a prostitute!

I'm gonna carry out some diagnostics tomorrow before I go to work, but i'm not used to such low sync rates!!.

Looks like a call to Sky is on the cards...Tweaked on DMT and can only get a max sync now of 4mb which is even more annoying since its about 6mb short of what i can sync at!.

..No doubt I will have to go through the questions of "have you swapped your filter"

Updates to the O2 Wireless Box II

This is for info only from one of the O2 Support guys over on the O2 Forums:

Quote

Hi everyone,

We’ve listened to your feedback on our O2 Wireless Box II with our 8.2.23.0 firmware. As a result, we’re performing some updates to the O2 Wireless Box II.

Here’s a list of some of the things we’ve been working on that you’ve talked about:

• General Connectivity Issues
o O2 to O2 connectivity fix – http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=238053#238053
o General Connectivity fixes
• VPN Bug (being unable to connect to specific VPN services) – http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=31944
• General Security Updates
• Increased response times from our router configuration pages

To receive the update you don’t need to do anything, just leave your router switched on. If you haven’t received the update in the next few weeks, don’t worry, we’ll keep trying until we’ve updated them all, there’s no need to call customer services.

For more information, keep an eye on our Service Status Page (http://broadband.o2.co.uk/broadbandstatus/view/)
Thanks

Vivaciti Family 60

Well last week i got my exchange over to the Enta supplied - Vivaciti Family 60 and so far im a lot happier than i was on the Vivaciti Home 100 package.

Its been hassle free so far, i got just over 7Mb/s as soon as i connected and although it didn't stay there (i didn't really expect it to) it dont drop that much at all. In actual fact in this day and age im quite happy with what they are providing atm (lets just hope i dont curse it !).

Also they actually have a BW usage monitor , handy, but it does say some odd things sometimes. Im not that worried about it atm as its just me splitting hairs but if there's one thing that computers should be good at and thats math

as far as i can tell (well if i can remember my school days) 1.90 is not 4% of 60 , ehh.

o well no matter.

It looks like if i dont go mad i should be able to deal with these usage restrictions without to much trouble.

All good so far Viva & Enta

P.S. even though the owner of Viva said they were going to have to drop there O-Bit supplied services because of problems with there tech support i have seen nothing mentioned anywhere about it, so was he telling me porkies, i wonder. There still selling it as far as i can see.

Sky TV, do I keep, or bin?

I have today been going through my outgoings and noticed i'm paying £59 a month (increases to £60 from September) for SKY TV + Movies (including 2 multirooms).

Looking back, i'm starting to think if it's actually worth it, on one hand I hardly watch any of the subscription channels, whereas on the other my parents like watching the movies and my sister makes use of pretty much everything (I even sometimes like the content on Discovery Channel or GOLD).

So as you can see, a difficult choice of whether to keep or get rid lies ahead.

On the other hand, if I do cancel it, it means i'm going down to freesat and that means loosing channels like Dave, Watch, SKY1 etc.

What do you guys reckon I should do (or do you have any input?)

Are they offering any good retention deals atm?
